Netherlands
The Netherlands played a key role in the Seven Countries Study in the second part of the project. This was due to the research and coordinating function of Daan Kromhout and to the unique contribution of the Zutphen Study in its focus on diet and lifestyle and its conduct of the FINE study and the HALE project, all of which broadened the scope of the Seven Countries Study.
The Zutphen cohort
The Zutphen cohort represented a random sample of all middle-aged men resident in the commercial town of Zutphen in the eastern part of the Netherlands. After 25 years of follow-up, when 50% of the men had died, the surviving cohort was enriched with other men of the same age. Read more about the Zutphen Study.
