Risk factors and CVD
Risk factors are measurable personal characteristics that are associated with a disease or health condition. In the Seven Countries Study they are mostly physiological measurements, and their values were related to the risk of coronary or cardiovascular disease.
List of findings on risk factors:
Long QT interval and CHD
Long QT interval related to high risk of CHD mortality A long QT interval in the resting ECG was associated with a 4-fold 15-year [...]
White Blood Cell count and coronary heart disease
High White Blood Cell count, high CHD mortality A high White Blood Cell (WBC) count is associated with a higher CHD mortality in the [...]
Body mass index and all-cause mortality
Underweight and overweight related to all-cause mortality In the European cohorts of the SCS middle-aged men with a body mass index (BMI) <18.5 kg/m2 had [...]
Global coronary risk in northern and southern Europe
Large differences in global CHD risk within Europe A re-analysis of the 10-year follow-up data of the SCS published in 2000 showed large differences between northern [...]
From individual risk factors to global cardiovascular risk
Individual risk factors and CHD prevention in the past In the 1960s and 70s, the Seven Countries Study and many other studies identified serum cholesterol, [...]
Major risk factors and cardiovascular disease
High blood pressure and smoking were risk factors for three major CVDs while serum cholesterol predicted only CHD Blood pressure and cigarette smoking predicted overall [...]
Four lifestyle factors combined and cardiovascular disease
A healthful diet and lifestyle is related to low CVD risk A Mediterranean style diet, a high level of physical activity, not smoking and [...]
Optimism and cardiovascular disease
High optimism low CVD mortality Optimism was a relatively stable trait over 15 years in the Zutphen Elderly Study. Elderly men with a high [...]
Depressive symptoms and cardiovascular disease
Depressive symptoms related to CVD mortality Elderly men from the FINE study cohorts of Finland, the Netherlands and Italy who manifested a number of [...]
Blood pressure trajectories, cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, and life years lost
Ten-year blood pressure trajectories were identified in the Minnesota Business and Professional Men Study and the Zutphen Study. Blood pressure trajectories were the strongest predictors [...]
Glucose tolerance, diabetes at entry and all-cause mortality in elderly men
The relationship of glucose tolerance at entry with 5-year all-cause mortality was investigated in Finland in men aged 65-84. Impaired compared to normal glucose [...]
Physical activity, smoking, insulin, glucose tolerance and diabetes in non-diabetic Dutch men
In 1990 in the Zutphen Elderly Study habitual physical activity of leisure-time was assessed with a validated questionnaire. On average, the men spent 1.5 [...]
Diet, insulin and glucose tolerance in non-diabetic men in The Netherlands
In 1990 a cross-sectional survey was carried out on diet in relation to insulin in the Zutphen Elderly Study. The individual association of dietary [...]
Diets of diabetic and non-diabetic elderly men in Finland, The Netherlands, and Italy
Around 1990, the diets of non-diabetic men differed markedly among the three countries. Dutch and Finnish elderly diabetic men consumed less added sugar than [...]
Body fat, glucose tolerance and diabetes incidence in non-diabetic elderly men
In 1970, the Dutch cohort of middle-aged men received a fasting oral glucose tolerance test with a glucose load of 50 grams and blood [...]
Physical activity, dietary fiber and body fat
A cross-sectional analysis on survey data collected in 16 cohorts of middle-aged men in the 1960s showed that the average population index of occupational [...]
Cardiovascular risk factors and all-cause mortality in the elderly
In the FINE Study the relations of classic cardiovascular risk factors with subsequent all-cause mortality were investigated in men aged 65-84 at baseline.
Cardiovascular risk factors and long-term all-cause mortality
In the FINE Study the relations of classic cardiovascular risk factors with subsequent all-cause mortality were investigated in men aged 65-84 at baseline.
Cardiovascular risk factors and disability
There is some evidence that classic cardiovascular risk factors measured in middle-age are related to disability and mental well-being in later life.
Depressive symptoms, physical inactivity and cardiovascular disease
Physical inactivity may be the intermediate factor in the relation between depressive symptoms and cardiovascular disease.
